5 Grounding Techniques for When Anxiety Hits Hard
When anxiety hits, your body forgets it's safe. Grounding techniques are the fastest way to remind it. Save this page — the next time you need it, you won't be in any state to search.
5-4-3-2-1 Senses
Name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste. This shifts your brain out of threat mode and back into the room you're actually in.
Box breathing
Inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Three rounds. The exhale longer than the inhale is what calms your nervous system — Navy SEALs use it for a reason.
Cold water reset
Splash cold water on your face or hold an ice cube for 30 seconds. It triggers the mammalian dive reflex and lowers your heart rate fast.
Name it to tame it
Out loud or in a note: 'I'm feeling anxiety. It feels like my chest is tight.' Naming an emotion engages the prefrontal cortex and reduces amygdala activation.
Feet on floor, hand on heart
Plant both feet flat. Place one hand on your chest. Notice the weight of you, here, now. You don't have to fix anything in this exact minute.
When grounding isn't enough
If anxiety is steady, daily, or pushing you toward harm, please reach a human — a therapist, your doctor, or 988 (US). Grounding is a tool, not a substitute for care you deserve.
